Why Your Marketing Isn’t Working (Even If You’re Trying Hard)
Apr 29, 2026
One of the many hats you juggle in your business is marketing.
Marketing can be a bit like marmite – you either love it, or you hate it. Either way, marketing your business is unavoidable, it’s something you have to do.
The problem with marketing though, is that you can be very busy with it, but it doesn’t always result in customers.
You can be posting, but nothing’s happening. You can try different things, but nothing sticks.
Those new customers remain elusive.
What most people do next is double down – more marketing must mean better results.
This isn’t always the case though.
The Trap Most Business Owners Fall Into
When marketing doesn’t result in the customers, or sales, that you want the most common ‘solution’ is to:
- Post more
- Try more platforms
- Copy what others are doing
- Jump on trends
- Change your approach
These changes make it feel like you’re moving forward – like you’re close to a breakthrough where the effort finally turns into customers, sales, and cash.
But when you spread yourself that thin, nothing actually moves.
The lead generation, front end, of your business remains static, despite all the time, energy and, potentially, money you pour into it.
The Real Problem Isn’t Your Marketing
The problem isn’t usually that you’re not doing enough marketing.
It’s that the decisions behind your marketing aren’t clear.
And unclear decisions lead to unclear results.
Better decisions lead to better marketing.
That clarity of direction contributes to the clarity and quality of your marketing. Which, in turn, contributes to the lead generation in your business.
What You’re Actually Missing
Because most small business owners aren’t marketeers, no one teaches you how to market your business.
And there’s so much information, or businesses, out there that claims to help small businesses with marketing it quickly becomes overwhelming.
A lot of the advice pushes you towards becoming a mini-influencer – which isn’t the goal for most businesses.
So, what are you actually missing? Clearly, and with no noise…
Structure. That’s what’s missing.
Not more effort. Not more tactics.
As with everything Next Steps for Business, structure is always key.
This missing structure can be summarised into 3 gaps.
- Clarity
Who you’re targeting – because let’s face it, 10 page ideal customer profile templates are confusing, and don’t actually help you narrow down who your ideal customer actually is.
What problem you solve – the key behind any business, and any marketing that business puts out there.
Why someone should choose you – how do you rise above the noise in the space you operate in? How do you show your customers they should pick you, over a competitor, or a solution that won’t solve the problem as well?
- Direction
This is where most people get stuck.
- What you should focus on
- What actually matters, and
- What to ignore
Do you know the answer to these 3 things? They’re key to your marketing. Without this, you try everything and commit to nothing with your marketing.
- Consistency
This isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing the right things repeatedly.
Without this, nothing compounds – you don’t build your marketing up, you’re constantly starting over.
Why Doing More Makes It Worse
If the decisions behind your marketing aren’t right, doing more doesn’t fix your marketing problem – it amplifies it.
If your messaging isn’t right, more posts just push that same weak message out there.
If you’re not using the right platforms to reach your customers, using more wrong platforms won’t help you get to those people.
So the more effort, time, and money you put into it – the most frustrated you become.
Even if you’re not physically spending money on your market, and it’s just your time – it’s still costing you. And your time still has a cost.
What Needs to Change
Before you do more marketing, you need to fix the foundations of your marketing.
You need to close those 3 gaps mentioned above.
You need to:
- Get clear on your message
- Decide what actually matters, and
- Create a simple structure to follow
Most small business owners don’t build this properly – because you’re not shown how, and the information out there is so overwhelming it’s hard to pick through to figure it out yourself.
And when this isn’t built properly, you stay stuck in activity without direction.
When you fix this, marketing becomes a lot simpler – and a lot more effective.
You don’t need to do more – you need to do the right things, consistently.
If your marketing feels messy or inconsistent, it’s usually not a lack of effort — it’s a lack of structure.
Getting clear on your message, your direction, and what actually matters makes everything else simpler.
